Flat Bread Pizza Topping Ideas and Variations:

1. Start with variations on traditional pizza that you already know and love.

  • Supreme Pizza: red tomato pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, cooked ground sausage, pepperoni, red onion, mushrooms, sliced black olives, and chopped green peppers
  • Hawaiian: red tomato pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, Canadian bacon or classic bacon, and pineapple tidbits
  • Meat Lovers: red tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, cooked ground sausage, pepperoni, Canadian bacon, crumbled bacon
  • Veggie Lovers: pesto for the sauce, fresh sliced mozzarella cheese, mushrooms, sweet bell peppers, sliced zucchini, and sweet onions
  • Chicken Bacon Ranch: ranch dressing for the sauce, mozzarella cheese, crumbled bacon, cooked shredded chicken, sliced green onions and chopped fresh green peppers and tomatoes.

2. Set up pizza making like a buffet and get the kids involved.

  • Use a muffin tin to keep toppings separate but accessible.
  • Do a quick poll before going to the grocery store to get at least one favorite topping for everyone.
  • This is a great chance to expose kids to new vegetables, they don’t have to use them but they might light to taste them plain before they go on the pizza.
  • Let the kids create their own masterpieces using what you set out.

3. Try your hand at pizza art.

  • Look up flatbread, pizza, or focaccia art online to get an idea of what I’m talking about.
  • Cut vegetables in interesting ways, like mini bell peppers cut into rounds often they look like flowers.
  • Make a masterpiece using edibles and turn them into a picture, flowers are the most common design people put in food art I’ve seen.

Tips for making the best flatbread pizzas:

  • Don’t let the sauce sit on the crust for too long. It makes the crust overly soggy and it’s hard to fix that once it happens. Getting things sauced and topped within about 10 minutes is ideal.
  • Find a flatbread that you love. If it’s good on its own it’ll make great pizza. If it’s only OK on it’s own it’ll be mediocre flatbread pizza crust as well.
  • Bake the pizza directly on the pan and skip the parchment or baking mat for this recipe. It helps the bottom of the flatbread to get a little crisp and it’s a really great texture.

How to store and reheat leftovers:

  • Store the leftovers after they have fully cooled. If you stack up leftover warm pizza in a container they’ll get soggy.
  • Store cooked leftovers in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
  • When you want to reheat the pizza, preheat your oven to 375 degrees and place a baking store or a baking sheet in the oven to warm up with the oven. When the pizza and pan are hot, place your flatbread pizza on the baking store or sheet. Bake until fully reheated, 5-8 minutes generally. Preheating the pan before adding the pizza helps the crust to re-crisp nicely.

Nice and crisp, no soggy pizza crust here!
